Junior Embroiderers - 2017 Programme

We have a thriving group of Junior Embroiderers & Textile Students (JETS), who meet on the first Saturday in the month - apart from August and December when there is no meeting - from 11 am - 1.00 pm at St Mary’s Church Centre, Leamington CV31 1JW.
Our sessions cover all kinds of textile-related activities, such as hand and machine stitching, dyeing, printing, weaving, using beads, and much more. We have made a variety of things, from bags to cushions and wall hangings, as well as cards and gifts for special occasions.  We sometimes enter competitions and take part in exhibitions, and have even won awards.

These are some of the things we are planning to do this year:

February, March, April
We will be creating fabric egg shell shapes; cutting out and stitching a bird or chick using a variety of hand stitches.

May, June, July
We will learn to make felt, using wet felting techniques, and then use the technique as part of an entry in the West Midlands Regional Day competition 'Contrasts'.

September, October, November
This time we will be designing and decorating a tote bag.

All students are given a sketchbook in which they are encouraged to keep samples of the stitching and techniques they learn, and where they can also record their textile ideas.
These are our meeting dates for 2017:
February 4th
March 4th
April 1st
May 6th
June 3rd
July 8th
No meeting in August
September 9th
October 8th
November 4th
No meeting in December

Leamington & District Branch at 'New Year, New You'

Our Embroiderers' Guild branch were in evidence at the 'New Year, New You!' event organised by Older People in Action at Leamington Town Hall on 21st January.

This drop-in event is aimed at people aged 50 and over in Warwick district who can find out about local groups and societies, and develop their interests or take up new ones.  Getting out and meeting like-minded people can enhance physical health and mental well-being - as we know!

Here are a couple of pictures of Jenny, Margherita and Val 'manning' the Guild stand.  They said they were able to talk to quite a few interested folk and hand out leaflets with details of our upcoming talks.

Friday 6th February Talk: Jane Cobbett, "Quilt Detective" / Workshop Saturday 7th

Jane Cobbett’s talk delves into the more unusual ways of dating quilts, looking at pattern, fabrics and hidden clues. Jane has an extensive collection of historical textiles from around the world, and she will be bringing some of her extensive quilt collection for us to look at.

Jane has been a tutor for over ten years, teaching with Coventry University, Adult Education and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.  Her other areas of tuition are Historical Needlework, Patchwork, Appliqué and Traditional Embroidery.

This promises to be a really interesting talk and visitors are always welcome to come and listen.  (Details of where we are on our 'How to find us' page - see right-hand column).

Jane Cobbett, Quilt Detective talk

This will be followed by a workshop on Saturday 7th:

“Folk Art Appliqué

The workshop will give you the opportunity to study a selection of household items, including vintage appliqué pieces from a felt tea cosy to full-size old and new appliqué quilts.

Learn and make samples of three different popular appliqué techniques and create a Folk Art style notebook.

Hand-outs and patterns will be available to use at the workshop and there will be a small sales table selling material, kits and patterns.

Branch members have received a requirements list for this workshop, but if you have any queries, please get in touch.
